Can new rocks in a new tank give off odors and make the tank cloudy even though they were rinsed?
I hаνе a nеw fish tank & everything іn іt іѕ nеw.Thе water hаѕ bееn tested. It hаѕ calcium аnd іѕ hard water.Thе ph іѕ fаntаѕtіс аnd thеrе іѕ nο ammonia іn іt.Wіth іn a day аnd a half thе water ѕtаrtеd tο gеt gray аnd hаd a tеrrіblе urinary smell tο іt.Cаn іt bе thе nеw rocks аnd nеw ornaments giving οff thе smell аnd clouding affect?I hаνе one οthеr older tank wіth thе same water аnd conditioner іn іt аnd іt hаѕ none οf thіѕ.Cаn thіѕ harm mу fish,аnd wіll thіѕ fade through time?
Sounds to me like one of two things can be happening, or both at the same time.
First, if the rocks and ornaments were picked off the ground and not sanitized correctly ( bioled and or chlorine bleach treatment ) they may possibly be giving off chemicals.
second, if the water is a milky sort of gray and not a brown sort of gray, it sounds like it may just be a habitual bacterial bloom, which is fantastic =) just wait a few days, up to a week and it will go away. try responsibility a 15-20% water change with de chlorinated water everyday untill it is gone.
hope this helps!

HI
Yes live rock when not cured will smell terrible and make the water gray. But usually when this happens your ammonia will rise because the rock is having die off. What about your calcium? What are the levels and what are the levels of your Alk and Mag. You may possibly also be experiencing Calcium precipitation.
Hello! Not sure what you mean by new rocks? Annoy? Ornamental river rocks?
New annoy can make the water go gray and smelly. Just imagine that all those rocks have just come from the bottom of a river someone under all the sediment and breaking down protiens from everything that has fallen into the water. An we all know no matter how many times we clean new annoy we still get a milky coolour in the water.
If its is new ornamental rocks, they shouldn’t be giving off any smell or colour. Best thing to do is water change and keep the tank cycling. Don’t add any fish till your Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia and PH tests are fine.
Also take note of where you got the rocks from, were they bleached and cleaned former to going in the tank? Are they an unsuitable rock for the aquarium like bushrock? Check the suitability with a local fish store or do a search online if you are unsure. New ornaments shouldn’t give off a smell, as they are glazed.
I hope this helps!
Alright STOP.
What is happening right now is a Bacteria Bloom, bacteria is trying to reproduce quickly because of so much ammonia, this is the nitrogen cycle. Don’t do any water changes until it clears (2-4 days) because that will just slow down the process.
After it is gone wait 1 more day then do a 10-25% water change, then keep responsibility this 2 times every week until your ammonia settles down and your nitrites peak, then your nitrates will peak and this is when your cycle is finished.
Here is a website all about it http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php
Don’t worry it has nothing to do with you decor, the smell will go away after the cycle is done.
sounds to me like bacterial bloom as well …. just continually change the water and you’ll be fine!! excellent luck!
