Is there a replacement for rocks when doing a clambake?

I don’t have any rocks to line a clambake hole with. Can lava rocks or ceramic briquettes be used? I’m not sure if either hold heat. I was thinking maybe charcoal but I figured the damp seaweed would put them out too quickly. Any ideas?

When we were kids we used to do alot of clambakes and my dad just dug a hole in the sand and put charcoal in it. Make sure you just keep an eye on it. Make seaweed wet but not soaking. Besides the seaweed should be on the very top covering everything. Thats what keeps the steam in. Good luck and enjoy!
